Kalmia ‘Freckles’ (left) and ‘Olympic Fire’ — among the oldest plants introduced to the garden, about 12 years ago. They looked identical when young, but ‘Freckles’ has paler leaves and a slightly more upright growth habit. Both are inclined to sprawl and in the past year have begun to spread from the roots. Deer blessedly ignore them (I’ve read that the foliage is mildly toxic). Quite hardy here, but in harsh winters the leaves look rather shabby.
